Get ready for the cooler weather!
Fall is in full swing now and we are slowly creeping up on the winter. I want to help you get ready for the cold weather. Take a step with me into my home Apothecary and lets whip up some great products to help you survive this Fall and Winter.
I made a Flu & Cold Tea for my family. At the sound of a cough I am brewing this by the gallon. Everybody in the house is drinking this tea. I must admit I was very surprised that it tastes so good. It is made with Yarrow, Echinacea, and Elderberries. These herbs are absolutely wonderful for fighting off coughs and colds. The herbs are also awesome for stimulating and boosting the immune system.
Cold & Flu Tea
Mix equal amounts in a air tight jar. I recommend ½ -1 teaspoon of this tea mix for one 6-8oz cup of hot water. Pour boiling water over the tea. Cover and allow to steep for 5-10 minutes. Add honey as a natural sweetener if needed.
But that’s not all I have to share with you today. I love cough drops but as usual I want to know what is in them and what they can do for me. So I decided to create my own.
Cold & Flu Tea (recipe listed above)
1/8 cup minced ginger
2 cups raw brown sugar
¼ cup honey
Brew 2 cups of cold and flu tea. Add ginger into the brewing process. Be sure to brew the tea strong. Strain the tea mix and ginger from the tea. Combine the tea, sugar and honey into a pot. Cook this on medium-high heat. Stir until sugar is completely dissolved. Bring to a boil and do not stir again. Once the temperature reaches 300F (use a candy thermometer) to be sure on the temp.
Pour the mixture into candy molds and allow to cool. I didn’t have candy molds so I poured the syrup into small holes I created in some powdered sugar.
Be careful as the hot mixture can burn. Viola you now have some delicious good for your natural cough drops.
